What have I done?
Dave, being a dentist, has been concerned about Creighton's teeth since he sucks on a pacifier. So at Creighton's 15 month doctor visit, when Dave brought up his concern, Dr Meyer told us now is the best time to get rid of the pacifier. She said babies no longer have the need for sucking by about 12 months and since Creighton transitioned so well off the bottle and to the sippy cup, he's been ready then to drop the paci. We thought we were really smart by restricting the paci to the crib for naps and bed time only. But Dr Meyer said now its time to let it go completely. See, now it's become part of his routine and its a habit for him and it will only get harder to break that habit. So.....we cut holes in his pacifiers tonight.
I feel so bad for him. We read books before bed like we always do and, before I started singing his nite-nite songs, I gave him his paci and he sucked a little and the paci didn't work, so he tried again. Then he took the paci out, looked at it, and threw it and looked at me with these sweet pitiful eyes like "mama please fix this!" and I couldn't : (
I had to put him to bed, confused and frustrated, and he cried/fussed/whined for 14 minutes. Then he gave up for about 3 minutes, cried one more minute, and then gave up completely and fell asleep. Who knows what the rest of the night has in store and if he'll wake up crying for his paci or if this is going to be much easier than we expect....
